What My Book Club Is Reading

Since I call in to so many book clubs, I'm often asked what my book club is reading.   By popular demand, here it is: the 20-plus-year freshly updated list of what "the chicks" have read.   We've had some real winners (recently The Help, The Dragon Tattoo series, those books by that wonderful author Jill Smolinski)...some that tanked (Greg Lougainis's autobiography was universally despised, even by the person who suggested it)...and a few that were loved by some and hated by others and therefore made for lively - even heated -  discussion (Twilight springs to mind).

Any of these on your reading list?

Names for Book Clubs

One of the things I've noticed since I've been calling in to "join" book clubs  reading THE NEXT THING ON MY LIST is that most of these groups have given themselves a name.

A few of my favorites:
•  The Booked for Lunch Gals (they meet every fourth Saturday for lunch)
•  The Well Red Book Club (they meet at a winery)
•  Chapter Chat
•  WHORS (Women of Hilliard Ohio Reading Society)
•  Nerdy Birdies
•  Diva-Lit
•  Book Broads & John (he got his own mention since he wasn't a broad).

I belong to a book club that's been together more than 20 years.  We don't have a name - although we do refer to ourselves collectively as "the chicks."  Given the fact that over the years we've gone through more bottles of wine at meetings than books, maybe we could be "the winos."

Does your book club have a name?  How did you come up with it?  Any ideas what we could name mine considering that we're disorganized, rarely all read the book, have no rules, but have nonetheless managed to hang in there for decades?

Great Sayings About the Writing Life

I thought I'd launch my little blog here with some great sayings about writing - these were lifted from the novel The Accidental Bestseller by Wendy Wax....plus one from my ex-husband.

"The cat sat on a mat is not a story.  The cat sat on another cat's mat is a story."
—John LeCarre

"Writing a novel is like driving a car at night.  You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way."
—E.L. Doctorow

"You don't write because you want to say something, you write because you've got something to say."
—F. Scott Fitzgerald

"There are three rules for writing a novel.  Unfortunately, no one knows what they are."
—W. Somerset Maugham

"Everything that doesn't kill you makes you stronger.  And later on you can use it in some story."
—Tapani Bagge

And from my ex-husband, John, trying to inspire me when I'd get stuck on a scene and couldn't seem to move forward:  "Don't polish the turd."

What sayings do you find inspirational in what you do?
